What is Pilates?


The original name of Pilates was Contrology: The Art of Control. This method was created in the 1900’s and developed over the course of Joseph Pilates’ lifetime. After Joe passed away in 1967 Contrology was renamed Pilates. Joe believed that by moving with control, following a specific order of exercises and breathing properly you could rid yourself of chronic pain and instabilities and improve every aspect of your life so you may find satisfaction and enjoyment in the most basic daily tasks.

Pilates can be performed on your own. There are wide variety of books, DVD’s and online websites with classes that you can use. Ideally Pilates is performed in a studio where you can experience all the apparatus as Joe originally intended, but many gym’s only offer mat classes. More gyms are introducing the Pilates equipment due to it’s increasing popularity not only to improve clients performance but to aid clients who experience pain, require more one on one assistance or are rehabilitating. How to Become a Pilates Instructor


Pilates is a very unique form of exercise. It is based upon Joseph Pilates system he called Contrology. Over the years many people have created a wide variety of training programs to teach his method which means there are many choices out there. These programs offer a variety of certifications such as Mat Certifications, Level Certifications, Comprehensive Certifications. Most of these certification programs start at the beginner level and work up to the advanced level.

For the most basic level you can receive your Beginner Mat Certification in a very short time. Different programs have different criteria for their certification. Depending upon how in depth you want your program to be might require more or less of your time. (more…)

Pilates pure and simple


In his book Return to Life Through Contrology we see grainy black and white photos of Joe Pilates stretching and rolling, going from one seemingly odd pose to another. After swimming, a crescendo on moments begin as Joe performs one wildly difficult maneuver after another. A variety of complex positions you can only imagine.

The year ways 1945. The place New York City. Without knowing it, Joe was developing a revolutionary exercise modality that is just starting to begin seeing it’s potential today. Potential not only as fitness but as rehabilitation, as a guaranteed tried and true way of optimizing the body, developing it in such a balanced and specific way that it’s become the cornerstone for many top athletes.
